What’s Working Wednesday: The Slow, Steady Growth of Blogging
I keep track of a lot of stats and numbers every week, because it’s helpful to see numbers rising, even if it’s small numbers. A couple of weeks ago, I was looking over my blog stats and realized that posts from last year are starting to get views. There is a mixture of my posts being found in Google, which means my content is indexed and trusted, and people are searching for things I’m writing about. I have a few views from pinterest, although honestly, I haven’t used pinning as well as I could (that will be changing!).
When you first start blogging, it can sometimes feel like you are just talking into a void or to an audience that doesn’t exist yet. You write posts and you share them, you do a pin or make a reel about them on instagram, and not much happens. You check your stats and start feeling discouraged because the numbers are small, especially compared to the time and effort you put in with writing and posting and sharing.
But my recent increase in numbers made me pause, and I knew I needed to write a blog post about it!
Blogging Is Like Planting Seeds
Blogging is a lot like gardening. You don’t plant a seed one day and expect flowers or vegetables the next. You prepare the soil, plant the seeds, water them, tend them, and wait. Some days it looks like absolutely nothing is happening. The ground stays quiet for a long time before anything begins to break through the surface.
Blogging feels very much the same way.
It’s not always easy, and honestly, it can be discouraging at times. But as I’ve watched my own stats begin to rise from posts I wrote a year ago, I’m being reminded that the effort really does add up over time. Those older posts are working for me, bringing in readers, connections, bookings, and sales long after I hit publish. And I think that’s the beauty of blogging. The seeds you plant today may take time to grow, but they’re still growing.
What are you writing about currently, that will be found a few weeks or months from now? What did you write a few months ago that might start bringing in readers tomorrow? Maybe the work you’re doing today is simply too new to measure yet, and maybe your words are still finding their people. But, I’m here to encourage you today to keep planting those seeds! If you are experiencing slow, slow growth – don’t give up!
I’m writing these words to you AND to me: keep writing, keep sharing and keep showing up. The seeds you plant today may become tomorrow’s connections, readers, and sales, and opportunities.
