Five Things I Work TowardS When Designing a Website
When I sit down to design a website or blog, I’m not JUST thinking about fonts or colors or layouts. I DO think a lot about the brand, the design, the look, the colors.. but that’s just to get started.
I’m also thinking about the person on the other side of the screen.
The woman who’s wondering if this site is meant for her.
The business owner who wants to feel proud when sending someone to their link.
Here are five things I’m always working toward when I build a website.
A site that feels welcoming and makes sense right away
The first few seconds matter more than we realize. When someone lands on a site, they should feel comfortable almost immediately. They shouldn’t have to hunt for what the business does, who it’s for, or what the next step is.
A welcoming site feels calm, clear, and intentional. It gently answers questions like:
- Am I in the right place?
- Do they understand what I need?
- What am I supposed to do next?
This clarity builds confidence, and confidence keeps people reading, clicking, and buying.
A clear purpose on every page
Every page on the site needs a job. Whether it’s to inform, sell, invite, or encourage, the purpose of the pages should be obvious and not buried under too many words or distractions.
This doesn’t mean everything has to be sales-focused. It just means the site is thoughtfully guiding visitors instead of leaving them to figure it out on their own.
Good design supports the message instead of competing with it.
A site that reflects the person behind the business
This part matters deeply to me.
Your website shouldn’t feel generic or disconnected from who you are. It should reflect your heart, your values, and the way you show up in your work. That might show up through your words, your images, your colors, or the way your story is shared.
People don’t just buy products or services. They connect with people. My job is to make sure your website or blog reflects you so visitors can make that connection to YOU and what you are offering.
A design that feels current, but not trendy for the sake of it
I want a site to feel fresh and polished, but I also want it to age well.
Chasing trends can make a site feel dated very quickly. Instead, I focus on clean design choices that will still feel good a year from now… or three.
The goal is to create a site that grows with your business or your needs, instead of constantly needing to be replaced.
A site that actually supports the business owner
A website should make your life easier, not harder. If I design a site that looks pretty, but is impossible to update or change? Then I’m not doing my job!
It should be manageable, flexible, and built with the future in mind, whether that’s adding a blog, selling something new, or shifting focus as the business evolves. I think about how I can design something amazing, but ALSO user-friendly for you behind the scenes. If you want to maintain your own website after the design is finished, it should be as easy as possible for you to do that.
Why all of this matters
I work hard to create websites and blogs that answer these questions, and many more.
If you’re feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or unsure whether your current site is really doing what it should, I’d love to talk about it. Sometimes a simple conversation brings so much clarity.
If you’re looking for a designer who cares about the heart behind your business as much as the design itself, I’d love to visit about your needs.
