Why Sharing Your Story is Life-Changing
Thirty years ago, I interviewed my two grandmothers for several hours each. This was back in the day when you would record on a cassette tape, and I filled up at least ten tapes, back and front, of myself and my grandmothers talking about their lives. I asked about their childhoods, their teen years, early marriage years, and what it was like as a young mom and then becoming grandmothers.
It was incredibly special to sit and talk with these two women who had such an impact on me. I learned details about their life that I would have never known if I hadn’t made a specific effort to ask the questions. And THEY would have never shared the stories, if I had not asked.
My original plan was to write those stories and turn them into books to share with them and with our family. But, I was ahead of time with my idea, because thirty years ago in order to get a book printed, it could cost nearly $100. It was not affordable, and I got discouraged, and then life moved on with babies and kids and.. well, life.
Thirty years later, I’m coming back to this project. It no longer costs $100 to print a book. You can publish a book with amazon/KDP for just a few dollars each. So, I will be finishing my grandmother’s stories and publishing their books. Although they are no longer here to see the finished products, I will be able to share with my siblings and cousins, and all our children. Their legacy will be available, and the stories they shared won’t be lost.
What does that have to do with blogging? Well, let me tell you – you need to tell your story. There might not be a young granddaughter willing or able to interview you and ask details of your life. And YOUR STORY MATTERS. Yes, I just yelled that – because it’s so, so important!
Just like my grandmothers (who were in their 60’s at the time), you have a lifetime of lessons to share, from managing experiences when you were a child, dealing with life changes and overcoming adversity. Sharing these experiences can be empowering, especially for younger women who may look to them for guidance. I was that young woman 30 years ago, and my daughter will have the chance to hear my grandmother’s stories because they have been recorded.
And I recognize that it might be overwhelming to think about writing your story. But I promise it doesn’t have to be hard. You don’t have to sit down and write your life story in one afternoon (that is impossible and would be overwhelming). Instead, you can write once piece at a time, and not necessarily in order, but as stories occur to you. And blogging? Is the perfect vehicle for this kind of story writing.
Your story is waiting to be shared, and there’s no better time to start than now. If you’re ready to bring your unique voice to life and share your experiences with the world, I’m here to help make that process simple and empowering. Let’s work together to create a blog that captures your story and connects you with others who need to hear it. Reach out to get started, and let’s design your space together.
