Feeling Alone
I mentioned in my About page that I have been self-employed as a website and graphic designer and creator/maker for over 27 years now. The majority of those years, I spent working from home – first, before my children came along, and then as the kids were born, toddling around, and continued as we worked with traditional school schedules AND homeschooling. It was exactly what I wanted to be doing, as I’m a little non-traditional and have had health challenges that made working from home for myself the ideal arrangement.
While I have loved almost everything about working for myself, there were times (especially when the kids were little) that I felt very alone in my endeavors. I worked almost exclusively with online customers and clients, so I didn’t have face-to-face interactions with live humans. And I wasn’t making enough to afford help, which means I was doing it all alone and wearing all the hats, all the time. I didn’t realize it for a long time, but I needed support. I needed someone to talk about business with, to brainstorm with, to laugh and cry with about the joys and difficulties of running a business. Feeling alone can make running a business so much harder, and it can be tempting to give up when you don’t have a cheerleader or friend to remind you of your “why”.
These days it’s so much easier to connect with others who are doing what you’re doing. You can find a group on Facebook for almost any industry, hobby, interest or craft. Actually, you can find 100’s of groups! As a business owner, I highly recommend looking for a group or two that fit your niche, your comfort zone and your needs. You might have to try a few to find your perfect spot, but hear me when I say – there is a group out there for you. Your people who will “get” you are waiting!
