How To Start Finding Your Voice
Finding your voice isn’t just about writing or speaking—it’s about uncovering who you are and what you want to say. I’ve mentioned before that life has a way of quieting our inner voice. One of the first things I learned as a young mother – there are a lot of other voices and distractions competing for our bandwidth! It wasn’t until my children were teenagers that I realized that my inner voice had become very, very quiet over the years of carrying babies, chasing toddlers, homeschooling and raising them. With just one teenager left at home now, I’m ready to reclaim and rediscover my voice, and I know it’s not too late. It’s never too late! Your voice is your story, your perspective, your unique way of seeing the world. And it matters!
When you share your voice, your story, your creativity, your perspective on life, you connect with others. It helps build community and can help those who need to hear what you have to say. And it’s scriptural! In Titus 2, God tells us that the older women should share with the younger. And not just share, but train. No matter your age, there is always a woman younger than you who can benefit from your knowledge, your confidence, your wisdom.
If you aren’t using your voice, or are out of practice, you can still reclaim and find that part of you.
Steps to Start Finding Your Voice
- Reflect on Your Journey
Take time to think about the experiences that have shaped you. What moments stand out as defining? What lessons have you learned? Start with simple journaling—write down memories, feelings, or even a single word that captures a meaningful moment. - Embrace Imperfection
Your voice doesn’t have to be polished or perfect. It’s uniquely yours. Allow yourself to explore ideas without worrying about how it sounds. This is about self-expression, not perfection. - Write or Speak Consistently
Finding your voice takes practice. Dedicate time each day or week to write, blog, or even record yourself speaking. The more you use your voice, the more confident you’ll become. - Share with a Trusted Audience
Sharing your story, even with one or two people, can be transformative. It builds confidence and helps you see the value of your perspective. Consider liking my Facebook page, where I hope to frow a gathering of other like-minded women who want to share their stories through blogging and journaling. - Follow the Prompts
If you feel stuck, prompts can help. Starting January 2025, I’ll be offering 365 daily prompts for telling your story. Again, join the Facebook page to keep up with the info on this, and to use the daily prompts as they begin. I’ll have January’s calendar of prompts available in mid-December.
Finding Your Voice as a Creative
If you’re an creative, artist, or crafter, your voice is already present in your work. Your designs and products tell a story—and it might be time to pair those with words. Consider sharing not just what you create, but why you create. What inspires you? What challenges have you faced? How has your craft been a part of your journey?
You might be thinking, Does my story really matter? The answer is yes. Your voice is a gift. It has the power to inspire, teach, and connect. The world needs to hear your perspective, your wisdom, and your heart.
I’d love to hear your thoughts! What’s holding you back from finding your voice? Or, if you’ve started, what has helped you the most? And if you are ready to start a blog for your creative business or to write your story, let’s get started today!
